the story behind the collab
DPx Gear and ESEE Knives unveiled the Izula folder at Blade Show Atlanta in June 2026, set for production by the end of the year. This collaboration transforms the minimalist Izula fixed blade into a durable everyday carry folder. It features MagnaCut or D2 blade steel, Micarta scales, and a Titanium and Ergal frame lock, manufactured by LionSteel.
Jeff Randall, alongside Mike Perrin, originally founded Randall's Adventure & Training and ESEE Knives to create practical, no-nonsense survival tools based on their experiences teaching jungle survival.
The original Izula, a skeletonized carbon steel neck knife, became a benchmark in the EDC community for its durability and ESEE’s lifetime warranty. While ESEE’s lineup has focused on reliable fixed blades for extreme conditions, they had yet to create a proprietary folding knife that matched their indestructible reputation.
Robert Young Pelton, a journalist and adventurer renowned for covering conflicts in some of the world's most dangerous war zones, founded DPx Gear out of a personal need for equipment that could survive hostile environments.
His flagship design, the Hostile Environment Survival Tool (HEST), combined a pry bar and a pocket knife. Pelton is known for overbuilding folding knives with strong frame-locks and reliable materials. DPx Gear is renowned for premium folders that perform like fixed blades.
The folding Izula, a decade-long project, fulfills the EDC community’s demand for a pocketable version of the famous fixed blade. This collaboration marks a reunion for Randall and Pelton, who first partnered when Pelton launched DPx Gear with ESEE to produce the original fixed-blade HEST using ESEE’s 1095 carbon steel.
Now, ESEE benefits from Pelton’s expertise in folding mechanisms. By combining Randall’s blade geometry with DPx Gear’s frame-lock architecture, they have created the hard-use folding Izula fans have wanted for ten years.
